Combiner boxes serve as a means of combining two or more sources of circuits from solar modules to, usually, a single DC output. Within each box there are OCPDs (overcurrent protection devices) to protect circuits in the event of overcurrent conditions. OCPDs consisit of fuses and breakers that are sized appropriately to handle the current that passes through in a current. Other typical components found in a combiner box also include diodes (to block current from travelling in reverse direction) and lightning arrestors (grounding devices which protect system from damaging effects of lightning).
Combiner boxes are typically installed close to the solar modules (array) to reduce power loss and would require an enclosure rating of IP54 and above to sustain usage in outdoor conditions.
Similar to mounting equipment, combiner boxes are fully customizable based on project requirement and budget.
